7/31/08: I was with SunRocket, a prepaid home phone service from 6/06-6/07. They went bankrupt. VOIP stepped in. I trusted them, 15 months for $200, used/kept the same little high speed internet box to connect your home phone. More of a disappointment than you'll want to read here, just do yourself a favor and never use VOIP, and if you do, don't believe anything that is told to you on the phone. So, here I am in my last 3 months with VOIP, which hasn't worked properly since I started with them and then stopped working completely, leaving me with no home phone service, and little customer service, which was suboptimal at best.
I heard about T-Mobile's home phone service: "@Home" It's new, allow me to fill you in as I am now a VERY satisfied customer. First, if you are a T-Mobile customer, you know how great they are already. Customer Service is second to none. In order to get home phone service from T-Mobile, you have to be a customer. This phone service works with high speed internet only. If you meet that criteria, the special right now is a router, valued at $150, for $50. Then an activation fee of $35 on your first bill. Beyond that, it's $10/month, plus taxes, so about $15.50 per month. And you get every service imaginable - caller ID, call waiting, 3 way calling, return number call back, voice mail if you don't have an answering machine at home, I was told I'd have access to see calls made and received on line under my account, etc, etc, etc... it's all included, just not international calling. I think there's a charge for that, but I'm not sure what it is as it doesn't apply to me so I never inquired.
First, let's talk about the router. Linksys, high end, 4 ports for wireless "everything else in your house", 2 phone lines "in", and a SIM card that allows for 1 or 2 numbers to be added to your account. It's very smart on their end, makes it easy for us on our end as consumers. You sign a 2 year contract for "@Home", it doesn't affect your current T-Mobile contract re your current cell service - you are simply adding a line, or 2 if you prefer that option. The new "line" is added to your account. You port your current home phone number over via their customer service department - takes 7-10 days - you have a temporary number while that's going on, then voila!, your talking clearly, seamlessly, no bounce back, via their service!
I opted to buy a new phone system with addition phones for my house. The base, with answering machine, connects to the router, the other 2 phones work wire-lessly off the base in other areas of the house. I decided to change up on my current phone system so I'd be on a different frequency than other wireless devices in my house. A 6.0 DECT 1.9 ghz phone is the way to go. After reviewing these phone extensively online, I chose the Panasonic talking caller ID phone w/answering machine and 2 additional phones. If you are a Costco member, it's $80 for the entire set, elsewhere it's more expensive. I was very happy to see Costco had the exact phone set I was looking for after I'd done my research. T-Mobile sells a VTech phone with an additional phone in their store, same 6.0 DECT 1.9ghz, but I wanted 2 extra phones, not just one, and the price was the same.
So, there you have it. Thank you T-Mobile for once again making my life better and for making my shopping and subscribing experience a pleasant one, that I can always count on.
