What WILL I think up next?

2008 Red Bull Art of the Can, an international competition of creating art from Red Bull cans, happened in Houston this year at the Galleria.  There were 500 entries from around the world and 47 were on display in their own "build out" on the first floor of the Galleria from July 12-25! I was an exhibiting artist! What a blast it all was - the exhibit, the opening night Gala, the artists.  The crowds were HUGE and as usual, the Red Bull team was great to all of us.  Go to www.RedBullArtoftheCan.com to see all the galleries of previous Red Bull Art of Can exhibitions.

My entry for this event was Ecstatic Anticipation. I named her Ima Mannequin as soon as I got her in the mail. The idea started off small enough, only a mask covered in strips of Red Bull aluminum, with a can pouring out Red Bull that would be made out of glass. When I found Ima online, I had to have her, and then the madness you will see in the pictures below started. Something to notice: She's drinking Sugar Free Red Bull, so her hair, eyelashes and the can are Sugar Free Red Bull. All of her accessories are regular Red Bull. Nothing like a little continuity huh?

April 6: Completely, totally finished, house cleaned, taking to Gallery today.
I made this piece for Red Bull instead of making an art car for our local annual Art Car Parade this year!

July 8:  Red Bull Art of Can Exhibit space built in the Galleria.  I pick up my entry to rehang her shorter to fit in display case.

July 11:  Houston Galleria Ice Rink covered with flooring and curtained off.  The Gala takes all day to set up.  Party starts for the artists at 8pm, the public at 9p.  All of the art was moved down onto the rink for the party.  There's a picture of me somewhere, hope to see it soon, IN the case with my piece, rehanging her the day of the party.  Then there was the party, and what a party it was.  Make sure you scroll all the way through the pictures below to see us at the Gala!  Nicole Strine does Red Bull Art of the Can once again!

July 14:  click here to read the article on the Gala and Exhibition in the Houston Chronicle.  If you were lucky and saw a hard copy, you also saw a picture of Ecstatic Anticipation along with the article!

Thank you Mike, the best hubby in the whole world! He stopped everything he was doing every single time I asked him for a helping hand. And he has an amazing relaxing calmness combined with humor that is a perfect counter balance to my over-the-top enthusiasm when I'm obsessed while making any of my art. You're awesome.
