Red Bull Art of Can juried exhibition set for July; deadline for entries Sunday

By ANNETTE BAIRD, Houston Chronicle Correspondent

Artist Nicole Strine has been toiling for weeks on what a she described as "a beautiful babe drinking a sugar free Red Bull," titled Ecstatic Anticipation.

The northwest Houston resident said she spent 30 hours alone weaving metal strips for the scarf around the woman's life-size neck.

"This has taken a long time," said Strine, who has a day job as an MRI technologist.

"I have been obsessive about this. I wanted people to look at this and say, `how the hell did she do that?' "

Strine hopes the piece will be selected to be part of the upcoming Red Bull Art of Can juried art exhibition, which will be held in Houston in July.

All the entries must be made from - or inspired by - Red Bull cans.

Up to 40 pieces will be selected to be exhibited July 11-25 at The Galleria, 5085 Westheimer. Judges said they will be looking for creativity, originality and the message.

"I like art that takes the simple and takes it to the sublime," said art collector Lester Marks, one of eight judges from the Houston art community.

"I like art that takes the ordinary to the extraordinary; the weird into the wonderful."

Carolyn Farb, also a judge, said judging from the artwork submitted in years past, it won't be an easy process.

Farb, who also collects art, said she is delighted the exhibit is in Houston, because it will give Houstonians the opportunity to see unique and amazing artwork by young emerging and established artists.

New York artist Shelter Serra described his piece as a 3-foot by 3-foot sculpture of a mountain made of Red Bull cans, which he said is a metaphor for an obstacle.

Serra said the competition is about transforming one material into another for aesthetic contemplation.

"That is pretty much what art is about," he said.

The deadline to submit entries is between 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday at Winter Street Studios, Studio C-2, 2101 Winter St.
